Lilies...
There are over 100 species in the Lily family, but three main species are grown for the floral industry, with hybrids increasing the list.  Lilium longiflorum is the commonly-known Easter lily.  Although occasionally offered as a cut flower, it is more often seen potted around Easter.  Oriental lilies are the large-flowered, heavily-scented lilies, usually available in shades of pink, white, and pale yellow.  Asiatic lilies are somewhat smaller, usually in orange and yellow and heavily speckled in the throat.  Recently Asiatics have been crossed with longiflorum lilies to create what are known as "L-A hybrids".  These new hybrids have few or no speckles, have a thicker, sturdier petal and come in a wider array of colors than the old Asiatics.  The size is between that of Orientals and Asiatics.

Whatever the variety, lilies create a beautiful accent for any bouquet.  Like gerberas, they last longer in a vase than in floral foam, but will perform satisfactorily in a basket or container bouquet.  Often lilies will have several buds on one stem; if you cut the open blossoms as they fade, the remaining buds will open, extending the life of the arrangement significantly.
