Sometimes considered "common" or "trite," carnations (dianthus genus) are perfectly capable of holding their own in an arrangement, even achieving a look en masse that no other flower can match. Carnations are one of the hardiest and longest-lasting of the cut flowers, and come in every color except blue, including many striking bi-colors.
